Overview
Live timers let you track time as you work. Start a timer against a client and optional task, pause and resume it as needed, then stop it to create a time record. Timer state is saved on the server, so it survives page refreshes and browser closures. Every page in the dashboard shows your active timer in the header so you always know what is running.
Starting a Timer
You can start a timer from a task's detail page:
- 1Open a task that has a client assigned.
- 2In the Time Tracking card, click Start Timer.
- 3A green pulsing indicator and elapsed time appear immediately in the header.
The timer is linked to the task's client and task automatically. You can only have one active timer at a time.
The Start Timer button only appears on tasks that have a client assigned. If the task has no client, assign one first.
The Header Timer Widget
While a timer is running, a button appears in the top navigation bar showing a green pulsing dot, the elapsed time, and the running charge (if your billing role has an hourly rate). Click it to open a popover with:
- The client name and task title the timer is linked to.
- The current elapsed time and running charge.
- A Pause button (or Resume if already paused).
- A Stop button to finish and save the time record.
When paused, the dot changes from green to amber and stops pulsing.
Pausing and Resuming
Click Pause in the header widget popover to freeze the elapsed time. The timer keeps its accumulated seconds but stops counting until you click Resume. You can pause and resume as many times as needed.
On a task's detail page, you can also pause and resume using the small control buttons next to your active timer in the Time Tracking card.
Stopping a Timer
Click Stop in the header widget popover, or click the stop button on the task's Time Tracking card. Stopping the timer creates a time record with the total elapsed duration, linked to the original client and task. The charge is calculated from your billing role rate.
Stopping a timer creates the time record immediately. You can edit the record afterwards from the Time Records page if you need to adjust the times or charge.
Viewing All Active Timers
The Active Timers panel at the top of the Time Records page shows every running timer across your organisation. Each entry displays:
- The staff member's name.
- The client and task they are working on.
- A live-updating elapsed time.
- A green pulsing dot for running timers or an amber dot for paused timers.
This panel only appears when at least one timer is active in the organisation.
